Ajrakh blocks are about 5-6” big. Any bigger, and you need master craftsmen to place them properly or they would be out of sorts, not aligned. When we asked Karigar uncle to make us neck yokes - which are about 10-12” wide and at least 14” long, he laughed. I kid you not, he just laughed as if we had cracked a joke! We discussed making part blocks, and when he realised we were being serious, he looked us in the eye and said, kya kya karaoge aap log (what all will you make us do!) - maybe he was exasperated, but he told us later how the Karigar in him was excited at the prospect. While on the outside he was dismissive of the idea, within 5 minutes he started suggesting what we can do, and how it can be done. He requested us to make screen print necks first - get them done in the type we want, and then we can concentrate on block print. If one asks so nicely, who are we to refuse? So we got a few designs done in screen print with natural dyes. These designs were SOLE creation of Sangisathi. This is something you will NEVER find anywhere else, unless it is copied, of course. We took inspiration from Persian architecture, created mood boards before we even started the designing!
