Ajrakh is traditionally found in Kutch (Gujarat) and Barmer (Rajasthan). It is created using woodblock stamps to produce various geometric patterns, which are applied to fabric with natural dyes, including vegetable and mineral dyes. The most common colors used in ajrakh include blue, red, black, yellow, and green, with indigo being one of the most prevalent dyes.
The origins of ajrakh can be traced back to Mohenjo-daro, where kings and royals were depicted wearing similar prints to those seen in modern ajrakh designs. The appeal of ajrakh lies in its simple yet elegant patterns and natural texture. As a hand block print fabric made with natural dyes, small variations in color and irregularities in the prints are typical and contribute to the unique beauty of this art form.
